At the Sagehen Field Station in the Sierra Nevada, I coordinated a UC Berkeley artist residency on fire ecologies and the practice of good fire, gathering artists to think with burned ground. From the large US Forest service snowmelt burn nests I collected charcoal and ground it into pigment and paint, and returned some of it to the fire as ritual offering, a small reciprocity for what the burn had given. The residency grew into Ecological Aesthetics, a booklet I co-edited with Art & Humanities scholar Shannon Jackson.
