Joshua trees and ecologies of repair 2024
This work builds on my earlier project Pioneer Species, shifting from critique toward practices of ecological repair. It asks how we might begin to untangle the legacies of settler colonialism and environmental extraction embedded within the so-called American West. What does restoration look like when approached through mutual aid and relational care? The project connects to my ongoing initiative Ecologies of Care for Joshua Trees, developed with community groups, activists, and state agencies. I am experimenting with biodegradable mycelium containers that house Joshua tree seedlings and nurse plants, creating living structures designed to support ecosystem regeneration.
This work informed Joshua tree endangered species regulation through the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife.
